Why Sebum Production Increases in Heat

Sebum is the natural oil produced by sebaceous glands in the skin. It helps protect and moisturize the skin by forming a barrier that prevents water loss. However, during summer or in hot and humid environments, sebum production tends to increase.

Higher temperatures stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Sweat and humidity can also mix with sebum on the skin surface, making the skin appear oily, shiny, and more prone to clogged pores. Excess sebum can trap dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria, which may lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts.

Managing sebum during summer is important to maintain balanced skin and prevent skin concerns related to excess oil.

Ø Ingredients That Regulate Oil Production

Many skincare products designed for oily skin contain ingredients that help control or balance sebum production. These ingredients work by reducing oil production, absorbing excess oil, or keeping pores clear.

Common oil-controlling ingredients include:

Niacinamide – Helps regulate sebum production and improve skin barrier function.
Salicylic Acid – Penetrates pores and removes excess oil and dead skin cells.
Zinc PCA – Helps control oil production and has mild antibacterial properties.
Clay (Kaolin or Bentonite) – Absorbs excess oil from the skin surface.
Green Tea Extract – Contains antioxidants that may help reduce sebum activity.
These ingredients are commonly found in cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers designed for oily or acne-prone skin.

Ø Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid for Oily Skin

Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a popular skincare ingredient that helps regulate sebum production and strengthen the skin barrier. It also helps reduce redness, improve skin texture, and minimize the appearance of pores.

Because of its gentle nature, niacinamide is suitable for most skin types, including oily, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is widely used in products designed for oily and acne-prone skin. It is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores and dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells.

This helps unclog pores, reduce blackheads and whiteheads, and prevent acne breakouts. Salicylic acid also has mild anti-inflammatory properties that help calm irritated skin.

Ø Lightweight Formulations for Shine Control

During summer, heavy creams and thick skincare products may feel uncomfortable and increase the appearance of oily skin. For this reason, lightweight formulations are often preferred.

Examples include:

Gel-based moisturizers
Water-based serums
Oil-free lotions
Mattifying sunscreens
These formulations provide hydration without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue. Lightweight textures also help the skin feel fresh and reduce the appearance of shine throughout the day.

Ø Tips for Acne-Prone Skin in Summer

People with acne-prone skin should follow a few important skincare practices during summer to keep their skin balanced and healthy.

Use a gentle cleanser twice a day to remove sweat, oil, and dirt.
Choose oil-free or non-comedogenic products that do not clog pores.
Apply sunscreen daily, preferably lightweight or gel-based formulas.
Avoid touching or picking at pimples, which can worsen inflammation.
Maintain hydration, as dehydrated skin may produce more oil to compensate.
