Ø What Are Humectants and How They Work

Humectants are ingredients used in skincare formulations that attract and retain moisture in the skin. They are hygroscopic substances, meaning they have the ability to pull water from the surrounding environment or from deeper layers of the skin into the outermost layer known as the stratum corneum.

When applied to the skin, humectants bind water molecules and help increase the water content of the skin surface. This results in improved hydration, smoother skin texture, and better skin elasticity. Because of this ability to hold water, humectants are commonly included in moisturizers, serums, creams, and lotions.

However, in very dry environments, humectants may draw moisture from deeper layers of the skin instead of the atmosphere. For this reason, they are often combined with emollients and occlusives in skincare formulations to maintain proper hydration balance.

Common Humectants Used in Skincare

Glycerin

Glycerin is one of the most widely used and effective humectants in cosmetic formulations. It is a clear, odorless liquid derived from plant oils or synthetic sources. Glycerin works by attracting water molecules and binding them to the skin’s surface.

It helps improve skin hydration, smoothness, and elasticity. Because it is gentle and non-irritating, glycerin is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. It is commonly used in moisturizers, cleansers, toners, and serums.

Sorbitol

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol derived from glucose. It acts as a mild humectant that helps retain moisture in the skin. Sorbitol is often used in cosmetic formulations to provide hydration while also improving the texture and stability of the product.

Compared to glycerin, sorbitol has a lighter feel on the skin and is sometimes used in combination with other humectants to enhance moisture retention.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA (Sodium Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid) is a powerful humectant naturally found in the skin. It is part of the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), which helps maintain skin hydration and flexibility.

Sodium PCA has excellent water-binding properties and can hold several times its weight in water. Because of this, it is frequently used in skincare products designed for dry or dehydrated skin.

Humectants vs. Emollients vs. Occlusives

Moisturizing skincare formulations usually contain three types of ingredients that work together to maintain skin hydration.

· Humectants

Humectants attract water and increase the moisture content of the skin. They help hydrate the outer layer of the skin and improve its softness and elasticity.

· Emollients

Emollients are ingredients that soften and smooth the skin by filling the small gaps between skin cells. They improve skin texture and restore the skin barrier. Examples include oils, fatty acids, and certain plant butters.

· Occlusives

Occlusives form a protective layer on the surface of the skin that prevents water from evaporating. They are highly effective at reducing moisture loss and protecting the skin barrier. Examples include petroleum jelly, mineral oil, and certain waxes.

In a well-balanced moisturizer:

Emollients smooth and repair the skin
Occlusives seal moisture into the skin
Impact on Skin Hydration and TEWL Reduction

Humectants play a major role in improving skin hydration. By increasing the water content in the stratum corneum, they help the skin appear softer, smoother, and more supple.

They also help manage Trans epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). TEWL refers to the natural process where water evaporates from the skin’s surface. Excessive TEWL can lead to dry, irritated, or damaged skin.

While humectants attract moisture, they are most effective at reducing TEWL when used alongside occlusive ingredients that create a protective barrier on the skin. Together, these ingredients help maintain the skin’s moisture balance and strengthen the skin barrier.
